Last year I could not find hanging baskets with strawberries, not at nurseries or grocery stores. So I made my own in a coconut husk lined hanging basket that I already had. Pretty simple, I added potting soil and about 4 strawberry plants. But, the planter didn't do that well, maybe 2-3 berries. The strawberries on the ground were really productive, while this hanging basket wasn't.
I intended to plant them at the community garden, but hesitated thinking about tilling and what to do if they took over the garden. So they sat in the basket on the covered lower deck all winter. I finally set it out in the rain and hung it up on a plant hook about a month ago.
This morning I noticed all these berries dripping with rain. Lots of berries. Guess the moral of that story is the less intervention on my part the better the plants. I can't wait to eat them. Just need a little sun...

ReplyDeleteI haven't had any problems with birds eating the fruit. I have a bird house and a bird feeder a few feet away.
ReplyDeleteOne of the reasons for putting the berries in a hanging basket is due to the slugs here in the northwest. They devour everything and I haven't found a safe way to get rid of them. I plan to try copper tape this year.

We have such a problem with rabbits: they always get my strawberries. I hadn't thought about growing them in hanging baskets. I may just outsmart them yet!
