Potatoes 101

Yesterday we went to the garden to water. Chris watered while I picked - tomatoes, green beans, a zucchini AND 1 potato. When I saw the potato plants I was very disappointed because I had battled the dread Flea Beetle and was proud of saving 1/2 the plants. Yesterday they all looked bad, yellow and wilted. So I tried shoveling down to the base of one, thinking there would be nothing to find, and found this little potato. Success.

My sister had sent potato advice from her office garden, warning that the plants would start to look bad, but I just didn't picture the plants looking that bad. I will follow that advice and ease off the water now.

I saw this sunflower in another plot yesterday, this is the best flower find yet. I've never seen one with this huge dome, but this guy is perfectly straight and stands out from the others at the garden. I'm guessing there's a name for this type of sunflower, if you know what it is, please leave a comment.

  1. Yes, we stopped watering the potato plants nearly a month ago...a couple have dried up and died all the way...this is when you go digging. I just dug up three huge yukon golds...yummmy.
