Just finished Sugar Snaps and Strawberries, by Andrea Bellamy. This book focuses on edible gardening in small spaces.  She uses containers to garden at home and has a plot in a community garden. That was a light bulb moment, which led me to look up the community garden near me.  Turned out they'd started taking names for the plot lottery. Drawing is on March 1st...


As I mentioned in a previous post, I learned that "bolting" is what my radish plants did last summer. Seems like a simple concept, they grew like pencils once it got hot. But it was perplexing to me, and I'd decided to skip seed planting because of it.  Now I know.


One thing I'll try this year is her suggestion to use copper strips to keep slugs away from some ground level plants.  I have beer pots, but they can be messy.


There are many good tips in the book about organic gardening. One element that I'd like to focus on is the idea of companion planting. Using plants to support their  neighbors is something I can try on a small scale at home and a bigger scale if I win that plot.
